Sliding Door Repair vs Replacement in Metro Detroit — Which Is Better?

The Short Answer: Repair First, Almost Always

In our 6+ years of repairing sliding doors across Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb County, we've found that over 90% of "broken" sliding doors don't need replacement — they need professional repair. The difference in cost is dramatic: repair typically runs – while full door replacement costs more depending on size and hardware.

When Repair Is the Right Choice

• Door is hard to open or grinding — roller replacement fixes this completely
• Door jumps off track — usually a bent track or worn rollers, fully repairable
• Lock won't engage — lock repair or replacement is straightforward
• Handle is broken — simple replacement
• Door doesn't seal well — often just worn weatherstripping
• Door makes noise — rollers and track cleaning resolve this

When Replacement Makes Sense

• The frame is structurally bent, warped, or cracked beyond repair
• The glass is impact-rated and shattered (the whole unit needs replacing)
• The door is over 20 years old and multiple systems are failing simultaneously
• You want to upgrade to impact-rated glass and the existing door isn't rated

We're not trying to upsell you on work you don't need.
